Teaching

David is an experienced brass teacher based  in Banbury, Oxfordshire. Specialising in beginner and young musicians, he works for two independent schools and a prep school providing bespoke teaching for each student. He believes in a holistic approach to instrument pedagogy, working not just on the technical challenges of playing an instrument, but the mental challenges of learning. He provides a supportive environment for every student, believing that in order to learn best, we must enjoy the process. Consequently, it is crucial that the early experiences of music are positive. David tailors his teaching to each individual pupil to suit their unique learning style and current skill level. He has taught children with special educational needs including autism, ADHD and other diagnosed and undiagnosed learning difficulties. David has a proven ability to communicate with people of all ages and abilities, from complete beginners to post-grade 8.

David has been teaching brass instruments including trombone, trumpet and euphonium for over 10 years. He works with the student to prepare for ABRSM or Trinity examinations and has had a 100% pass rate for his students. He is available for one-off consultations or regular, weekly lessons online or in person at your home. He currently teaches in the Banbury area in Oxfordshire, and South West London; Kew, Twickenham, and Richmond upon Thames.

David has been teaching trombone at Magdalen College School in Oxford since April 2026. Teaching from beginner to Diploma level trombonists there is a very high level of music making throughout prep, senior and sixth form.

David has been teaching trombone at Laymer Upper School since April 2026. Latymer has a very strong musi department consisting of 15 trombone players throughout the prep and upper school. I run the junior trombone band and lead year 4 whole-class pBone lessons.  

David has been working at St Margaret's since September 2022. He  is the first teacher of brass instruments the school has had and has built the department from nothing. He is working to foster a relationship between St Margaret's and Purcell Specialist Music School. This year saw the debut performance of their Junior Brass Ensemble at the Carols by Candlelight Service.

Since starting teaching at Ibstock Place School, David has increased the number of students learning a brass instrument three-fold. He joined the school in September 2024.

David worked as the trombone teacher at the prestigious Emanuel School from February 2020 until July 2024 and was involved with their year 6 pBone scheme since its creation in 2021.

David has worked at Broomfield House School in Kew Gardens since September 2023 and has been involved in providing brass tuition to a number of young students.

David has taught in schools around Wandsworth for  4 years. His work consists of whole class brass teaching, brass band conducting and one to one lessons.
